Summer is a season filled with plenty of fun for most people, but sometimes the heat gets to be a little too much. That's when it's time to head indoors to spend some time and take advantage of one of the greatest things ever invented: air conditioning. Luckily, there are plenty of exciting indoor options for entertainment, whether you want to spend time alone or with friends and family.

Go the Movies (or Binge Netflix)
When it's hot outside, you probably don't feel like moving around too much, even when you're inside soaking up the AC. This makes a movie (or four) the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Head to your local theater and splurge on a ticket and snacks. Movie theaters are usually super cool. If you prefer the comfort of your own home, crank up the streaming TV and start making your way through your watch list. Have some yummy takeout delivered so you don't have to leave the house at all.

Grab a Book
If you're more of the literary type, substitute a new book for a movie. For an outing, spend an afternoon in your local library or your favorite bookstore checking out the new releases. From there, you can read in any air-conditioned location you want, whether it's your house or a cute little coffee shop.

Visit a Museum
If you want to keep your brain in shape, head out to that local museum you've never visited and finally see what all the fuss is about. Like the bookstore and movie theater, it's probably pretty cool inside, but keep in mind that school is out for the summer. If the place is kid-friendly, it might be a bit crowded. Some larger museums even have cafes, theaters, and gift shops where you can make a whole day of it.

Shop Until You Drop
Do you have an indoor mall nearby? You can bet that it'll have the AC cranked up to high during the summer. If you like to shop, you've pretty much got your day planned out for you. But keep in mind that most malls have extras if you're short on cash or don't like to spend your day browsing. Look for a mall with an arcade, a theater, a food court, or a spa so you can have some extra fun while you stay cool.

Have a Playdate with the Kid
Do you have kids, or nieces and nephews? If so, consider taking a day off from your adult responsibilities and hanging out with them. You can make crafts, cook up some delicious snacks, watch movies, read, play, and just have a good time. It's a great way to bond and keep out of the heat at the same time.

Go Ice Skating
Of course, if you do feel the need to remain active while beating the heat, an indoor ice-skating rink is an excellent choice. It's cool inside — that's a no-brainer — and if you're hot enough, you won't even mind falling. It's an excellent workout, too.
